SLPP National Organiser and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa has alleged that the National People's Power (NPP) used a song glorifying the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the election campaign in an attempt to attract Tamil nationalist votes.

He further stated that those associated with the campaign are now attempting to distance themselves from the song by claiming that it was not produced by the NPP. Rajapaksa called for a proper investigation into the matter.

In a statement posted on his official social media platform, Rajapaksa said that a song praising the LTTE had been used during election campaigning to secure Tamil votes. However, he noted that the same Jaffna-based Member of Parliament who shared the song on social media is now claiming that it was not produced by the NPP.

Rajapaksa argued that if this claim is true, security authorities should immediately conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine who created and disseminated material that allegedly promotes a banned terrorist organisation.

He further stated that those responsible should be identified and brought before the law.

Expressing concern over what he described as a recurring political pattern, Rajapaksa said that the people of the Northern and Eastern Provinces are frequently used for electoral gain and subsequently neglected.

He maintained that the SLPP has never adopted double standards in relation to the North and East. On matters such as the 13th Amendment, land issues, development initiatives and the rehabilitation of former LTTE combatants who were misled in their youth, he said the party has consistently articulated its position openly.

Rajapaksa stated that even when such positions carried political risks, the party chose to speak honestly rather than engage in political theatrics. Whether or not people agreed with its views, they always knew where the party stood.

He added that since the end of the war in 2009, he has consistently supported the revival and development of the Northern and Eastern Provinces and pledged to continue serving the people of those regions irrespective of political considerations.
