Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala stated that legal action will be taken without discrimination in connection with the arrest of 22 monks and others at Katunayake Airport with a large quantity of narcotics, while also respecting the guidance of the Maha Sangha to safeguard the dignity of the Buddhist clergy and the Sasana.

He said that detailed investigations are underway and a report has already been submitted to court. Further action will be taken based on investigative findings.

He emphasised that the government does not differentiate based on status or position when enforcing the law, and that all individuals are equal before the law. He added that the national anti-narcotics programme is being successfully implemented and that this arrest is part of that effort.

He also rejected claims that the government is acting against Buddhism or religious traditions, noting that major religious events such as the Dalada Perahera and other religious processions have been successfully conducted under the current administration.

He reiterated that the government remains committed to strict enforcement against illegal activities while seeking guidance from religious leaders.
