Key Legislative Reforms to Be Presented to Cabinet
23-Jun-2026.
Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala has announced that several important Bills, including amendments to the Online Safety Act and a new Bill on the prevention of organised crime, will be submitted to Cabinet this week for approval.
The proposed reforms will also include amendments to the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board Act, the Computer Crimes Act and legislation relating to a Gambling Regulatory Authority.
The Minister clarified that the amendments to the Online Safety Act are intended to address abusive and harmful attacks on individuals through social media platforms and are not aimed at restricting freedom of speech or expression.
He also noted that existing laws governing cybercrime are inadequate to address modern challenges and require updating to meet current realities.
The proposed legislation will be jointly presented to Cabinet by the Ministers of Public Security, Health and Media, and Justice.
