04-May-2026.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa urged that cooperation between India and Sri Lanka must be taken forward in a more progressive manner for economic transformation, regional stability, and future development.
He stated that Sri Lanka is moving beyond recovery and entering a phase of rapid, inclusive, and sustainable development based on a stable macroeconomic foundation. He stressed that India should not be viewed as a competitor but as a key partner. He highlighted that growth in manufacturing and digital technology should be considered a major opportunity for bilateral cooperation.
Premadasa made these remarks while addressing the ZEE Media WION Global Innovation and Leadership Conference held in Colombo on May 2.
He further stated that joint efforts to ensure regional security and maritime stability are of key importance. He pledged Sri Lanka’s support for India’s bid to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
He proposed building a USD 30 billion digital economy between 2030 and 2035 through legal reforms, strong data protection laws, cyber security frameworks, and nationwide digital inclusion initiatives.
He also called for greater focus on renewable energy, supply chains, and tourism, positioning Sri Lanka as a strategic hub supporting India’s manufacturing strength. He proposed integrating India’s UPI system with Sri Lanka’s QR payment framework to facilitate seamless cross-border transactions, along with plans to develop Trincomalee into a regional energy hub.
Premadasa stated that Sri Lanka must move beyond volume-based growth and focus on high-value, sustainable experiences. He emphasised the need to promote the “Made in Sri Lanka” brand globally and reaffirmed commitment towards talent development and inclusive growth so that all citizens benefit through economic progress.
