MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena has claimed that the Government will not hold Provincial Council elections, despite assurances from some Government representatives.

Addressing a media briefing in Kalutara on May 31, he questioned whether statements made by JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva or Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa regarding the elections should be believed.

According to Abeygunawardena, Tilvin Silva's position that Provincial Council elections will not be held this year reflects the Government's actual stance.

He also criticised the Government over rising fuel prices and increasing living costs, claiming that the public is facing growing economic difficulties. He accused the Government of following policies dictated by the International Monetary Fund while burdening citizens with higher costs.

The MP said public dissatisfaction with the Government is increasing and argued that elections should be held to allow voters to express their views. He alleged that the Government would continue to delay Provincial Council elections by citing unresolved delimitation issues, as it fears electoral defeat.
