Defence Secretary Holds Talks on UN Peacekeeping Cooperation

Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha held high-level discussions with Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations of the United Nations.

The Sri Lankan delegation included Permanent Representative to the UN Jayantha Jayasuriya.

During the meeting, Sri Lanka provided an overview of its pre-deployment training framework for peacekeeping personnel. It was emphasised that all personnel selected for UN missions will receive structured training in human rights, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law.

The Defence Secretary also highlighted accountability mechanisms for personnel violating standards, including investigation procedures and disciplinary action, as well as the importance of a national investigative authority in ensuring compliance with international norms.
