Court Stays Removal of Vavuniya Mayor

The Northern Province High Court in Vavuniya has issued an interim order suspending the Gazette notification issued by the Northern Province Governor removing Vavuniya Mayor S. Kandeepan from office and from his council membership.

The order, issued on July 3, will remain in force until July 15, when the case resumes. The court also restrained authorities from implementing the Governor's order or taking any action to remove the Mayor during this period.

The interim relief followed lengthy submissions by President's Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran, appearing for the Mayor. Notices were also ordered on the respondents.
