Transparent Investigation on Mass Graves – President Anurakumara
03-Sep-2025.
“I am aware that old skeletons are being unearthed when digging the soil. At present, we are conducting a very transparent investigation into the mass graves in Chemmani, which has caused great concern. Our expectation is to build a country where such mass graves will never occur again,” said President Anurakumara Dissanayake.
He explained that as part of the government’s priority program of digitalization, administrative activities that were so far confined to Colombo will now be expanded to remote villages, enabling people to access government services more closely.
The President made these statements on 01-09-2025, while inaugurating the regional office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Jaffna.
The office, set up within the Jaffna District Secretariat premises, is equipped with modern technology and all required facilities. Until now, people from Jaffna, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu had to travel long distances to the only regional office in Vavuniya to access immigration services.
With the number of passport applications from the Northern Province increasing daily, this new office has been opened to provide easier access. To mark the occasion, the President symbolically issued three passports to Jaffna residents.
Later, at a meeting with Jaffna District officials, the President stressed that political leaders and government officers must work together to fulfill the people’s expectations. He assured that the government will protect officials who use their powers for the people’s benefit but will not hesitate to enforce the law against those who exploit their authority for money.
He underlined the importance of a strong public service to rebuild the nation, pointing out that behind every advanced country lies a robust administrative system.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening public service, digitalizing administrative processes, and ensuring law and order while rejecting divisive politics, racism, and sectarianism. Instead, he called for building a society based on humanity, unity, and brotherhood.
The President concluded by stressing that there must never again be war in the country, and all must work together to ensure peace, land release, reconciliation, and national rebuilding.
The event was attended by Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Fisheries Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Deputy Ministers, Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vethanayagam, Controller General of Immigration and Emigration Saminda Pathiraja, Jaffna District Secretary M. Prithiban, officials, security forces representatives, and others.
