TNA MP Says Government Unwilling to Release Tamil Political Prisoners

MP S. Shreenan Sivagnanam of the Tamil National Alliance stated the government is not willing to release Tamil political prisoners immediately.

At a press conference in Kilinochchi on August 8, responding to the Justice Minister’s remarks on the issue, he said last month he requested a parliamentary discussion on political solutions for Tamils and issues like land alienation and missing persons. This debate took place on July 22.

He emphasized that despite raising humanitarian questions about general amnesty and release for political prisoners, the government has yet to give a substantive response. 

The TNA is currently preparing to meet the President to push this agenda further.
