Secret Vehicle Deals Between Government and Opposition Members
23-Jul-2025.
Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that a former minister from the previous government sold a vehicle to a parliamentarian from the opposition. Both individuals belong to the two main political parties.
Since they were in power, they covered up the illegal vehicle transaction rather than exposing each other.
Speaking at an event in Kalutara, he said that about 10–12% of people in Kalutara District live without proper housing.
A special aid project is being implemented to improve their living standards. Under this initiative, 155 families will receive housing assistance, and 155 million rupees have been allocated for this, with 42 million already disbursed.
Additionally, 70 million rupees were allocated under the Indian insurance housing scheme for 25 families in Raigama Estate, Ingiriya.
A special housing plan for estate communities is also being prepared with the support of the National Housing Development Authority.
There are also plans to construct apartment complexes for government employees.
The minister emphasized that if someone struggles for years to build a house, they cannot contribute to the nation's economic development.
Hence, it's essential to reduce such burdens. Investigations are ongoing regarding illegally imported vehicles.
The same former minister sold a vehicle to an opposition MP, but neither disclosed it due to mutual protection.
Past governments ruled only for their business interests, but this administration aims to work for the people, he added.
