The Constitutional Council has unanimously approved the President’s recommendation to appoint Acting Inspector General of Police Priyanta Weerasooriya as the country’s 37th Inspector General of Police.

The Council, chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, met at the Parliamentary Complex on 11 August 2025 to consider the vacancy in the IGP post and the President’s recommendation. All members were present and in agreement.

A parliamentary resolution to remove Deshabandu Tennakoon from the post of IGP was passed on 5 August 2025 with 177 votes. The Speaker had formally notified the President of the decision.

In accordance with Articles 41A(1) and 61E of the Constitution, the President recommended Weerasooriya’s appointment to the Constitutional Council, which gave unanimous approval.

Tennakoon had been suspended from duty by the Supreme Court in July last year, leaving the IGP post vacant. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had appointed Weerasooriya as Acting IGP in September 2024 after serving as Deputy IGP.
