Only Two Days Left for the Prime Minister’s Deadline; Muthunagar Farmers Continue Protest
19-Oct-2025.
The continuous Satyagraha protest launched by the farmers of Muthunagar against the encroachment of their farmlands reached its 31st day on October 17.
The protest has been taking place in front of the District Secretariat.
According to the protesters, only two days remain for the second deadline promised by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to expire.
They allege that 352 farming families have been evicted on the grounds that the lands belonged to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, and that these lands were subsequently handed over to private companies for solar power generation.
The farmers also reported that two irrigation ponds in the area were closed down and handed over for the solar power project, severely affecting their livelihoods.
They have warned that if no favorable solution is provided, they will continue their protest indefinitely.
The demonstration is being supported by several organizations, including the People’s Struggle Front and the All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation.
