Justice Padman Surasena to be Appointed as Next Chief Justice

The Constitutional Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Supreme Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena as the next Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had nominated Justice Surasena for the position. On July 23, the Constitutional Council, chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, met and considered the vacancy for the Chief Justice role.
Justice Surasena is a senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, a former member of the Judicial Service Commission, and previously headed major cases, including chairing the parliamentary committee investigating suspended IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.
Current Chief Justice Murdu Fernando is scheduled to retire on July 27.
