India and Sri Lanka Sign MoU for Medical Equipment for New Deniyaya Base Hospital
15-Jul-2026.
India and Sri Lanka have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide medical equipment worth approximately Rs. 600 million for the new Deniyaya Base Hospital, which is being relocated to a safer site following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The agreement was signed by Health and Media Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha in the presence of Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
The new 300-bed hospital will be built at Handford Estate, about three kilometres from Deniyaya town, at an estimated cost of Rs. 6 billion in two phases. Construction is expected to begin this year and be completed within three years.
Health Minister Jayatissa described the agreement as another milestone in the longstanding friendship between India and Sri Lanka, noting that the advanced medical equipment would significantly improve healthcare services for residents of Matara District and surrounding rural areas.
