37 People Shot Dead in 68 Shootings

During the period so far this year, 68 shooting incidents have been recorded nationwide. 

In these incidents, 37 people were shot dead and 39 others were injured.

Police Media Spokesperson and Senior Superintendent of Police Udayakumar Wutler stated that 150 individuals, including 24 gunmen alleged to be connected to these shootings, have been arrested.

The Police Media Spokesperson shared these details during a special press briefing held in Colombo on 14 July 2025.
Providing further information, he said:

Between 1 January and 13 July, 68 shootings have been reported across the country. Of these, 50 incidents are linked to organized crime, while the remaining 18 were due to personal reasons.

Among those killed, 34 had connections to planned criminal acts. Likewise, of the 39 injured, 30 were also linked to organized crime.

However, under the directive of the Acting Inspector General of Police, special cordon and search operations are being conducted jointly by the police, the Special Task Force, and the armed forces to curb the activities of these underworld gangs.

From 1 January to 10 July, authorities seized 23 T56 assault rifles, 46 pistols, 30 revolvers, and a total of 1,165 firearms manufactured domestically and abroad.

Additionally, 24 gunmen allegedly connected to these shootings have been arrested, along with 15 motorcycle riders. A total of 150 individuals accused of providing assistance or support for these shootings have also been apprehended.
