Indian Foreign Secretary meets President Anura

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed satisfaction over the ongoing programmes aimed at contributing towards Sri Lanka’s economic and social development and assured that steps would be taken to extend India’s fullest support to the Government of Sri Lanka’s efforts to eliminate the drug menace.
The meeting between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who was on an official visit to Sri Lanka, and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake was held at the Presidential Secretariat on August 5.
During the discussion, both sides held extensive talks on the strong and longstanding relations between the two countries.
President Dissanayake recalled India’s support to Sri Lanka during the economic crisis in 2022–2023, the humanitarian assistance extended during the Ditwah disaster, cooperation provided for infrastructure reconstruction, and particularly India’s contribution towards meeting Sri Lanka’s energy requirements amid the conflict situation prevailing in the Middle East region. The President conveyed his appreciation to the Government of India for its continued assistance.
The two sides also discussed the progress of development projects being implemented in Sri Lanka with Indian government assistance, while attention was focused on future projects planned for implementation.
Highlighting the importance of India’s support for the Government’s efforts to completely eradicate the drug menace, President Dissanayake said he expected India’s fullest cooperation in controlling illegal drug trafficking, which has emerged as a regional threat.
The importance of regional countries working together to address challenges arising from climate change was also emphasised during the meeting.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed his satisfaction over the programmes currently being implemented to contribute towards Sri Lanka’s economic and social development and stated that necessary measures would be taken to provide India’s full support for the Government’s programme to eliminate the drug menace.
Discussions were also held on further strengthening cooperation between the two countries in areas including technology, energy and trade, in a manner beneficial to both sides.
The meeting was attended by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha, Deputy High Commissioner Maitreyi Kulkarni and other officials. Minister of Industry and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Chief of Presidential Staff Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Roshan Gamage, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Dr. Harshana Suriyaapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Aruni Ranaraja, among others, were also present.
