Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has assured representatives of six Tamil-speaking political parties of his full support, both inside and outside Parliament, for initiatives aimed at addressing the concerns of Tamil-speaking communities, including the immediate conduct of Provincial Council elections and the devolution of full powers to Provincial Councils.
The meeting was held at the Office of the Opposition Leader in Colombo on August 3.
Representatives of the six parties briefed the Opposition Leader on the discussions they had earlier held with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding constitutional reforms, Provincial Council elections, the release of private lands held by the military in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, and land rights for the Hill Country Tamil community.
After listening to the delegation, Premadasa reiterated his support for the immediate conduct of Provincial Council elections and the granting of full powers to the Provincial Councils.
He further assured the delegation that he would extend his complete support, both within and outside Parliament, for all measures aimed at resolving the long-standing issues affecting Tamil-speaking communities.
