Mahanayake Theras Write to President Anura Dissanayake

The Mahanayake Theras have written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, expressing their opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment to increase the retirement age of judges, describing the proposal as inappropriate, President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya, said.

He stated that the Mahanayake Theras, in their letter, urged the President not to proceed with the amendment, stressing the importance of safeguarding the dignity and independence of the judiciary.

Attorney Amarasuriya made these remarks against the backdrop of widespread opposition from the judiciary and legal fraternity to the Government's proposal to raise the retirement age of judges.
