Rakitha granted bail; Charith further remanded

United People’s Power (Samagi Jana Balawegaya) member Charith Abeysinghe has been remanded again after failing to fulfil the bail conditions imposed by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

Former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe’s son Rakitha Rajapakshe, Samagi Jana Balawegaya member Charith Abeysinghe, and former Civil Aviation Authority Executive Director Arun Sri Waruna were granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

The three suspects had been in remand custody for nearly one month after being arrested over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 120 million from the wife of underworld figure Harak Kata.

During the previous hearing, lawyers appearing for the suspects had submitted bail applications.

Accordingly, Fort Magistrate Asanka S. Bodaragama granted bail to the suspects after announcing the bail order.

The Magistrate ordered that certificates confirming that the sureties possessed income or assets equivalent to the bail amount should be submitted to court.

The suspects were also prohibited from travelling overseas and were ordered to surrender their passports to court.

In addition, the Magistrate directed the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) to submit a progress report on the investigations into the incident on December 8.

Following the bail order, Rakitha Rajapakshe and another suspect were released after fulfilling the required bail conditions.

However, Charith Abeysinghe failed to meet the bail requirements. Subsequently, he was taken back to prison custody by prison officials.
