Appeal Court Dismisses Petition Seeking Postponement of A/L Examination

The Court of Appeal has dismissed, without taking it up for hearing, a petition filed by a group of students seeking a two-month postponement of the forthcoming G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination.

The order was delivered on July 23, by a bench comprising Chief Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando.

The petition had been filed by nine students scheduled to sit the examination this year and was first taken up for consideration on July 16.

Appearing for the petitioners, Attorney-at-Law Boopathi Gahaduwa submitted that Education Ministry circulars prescribe a mandatory number of school days that must be completed before public examinations.

However, he argued that normal academic activities had been severely disrupted due to the Dithwa cyclone and the fuel crisis, during which Wednesdays were declared public holidays by the Government.

Counsel further contended that, under these circumstances, conducting the Advanced Level Examination as scheduled in August would place students at a significant disadvantage.

The Court, however, rejected the petition without proceeding to a full hearing.
