Speaker Ready to Act on No-Confidence Motion Against Justice Minister
16-Jul-2026.
Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne has said he is prepared to act in accordance with the Standing Orders of Parliament if a no-confidence motion against the Minister of Justice is formally submitted.
He made the remarks while addressing the media following an event in Anuradhapura on July 14.
Responding to reports that the Opposition intends to move a no-confidence motion against the Justice Minister, the Speaker said no such motion had been submitted to him so far.
"Any Member has the democratic right to move a no-confidence motion against anyone. However, no motion against the Justice Minister has been formally handed over to me," he said.
The Speaker added that once such a motion is received, he would act strictly in accordance with parliamentary procedure and Standing Orders.
He noted that Parliament had debated similar motions on previous occasions and assured that any future motion would be dealt with in accordance with the Constitution and established parliamentary practice.
Commenting on the functioning of the legislature, Mr. Wickramaratne said the Tenth Parliament was operating more effectively than previous Parliaments, although certain shortcomings remained.
"We maintain a firm stance on parliamentary discipline, as it is essential. Undesirable conduct cannot be eliminated overnight, and occasional disputes and confrontations still occur in the House. Ultimately, it is for the people to elect capable representatives to Parliament," he said.
