Cabinet Approves Measures to Protect Lands in the Eastern Province
24-Jun-2026.
The Cabinet has approved a special programme proposed by the President to curb illegal land encroachments, land filling and unauthorised coastal constructions in the Eastern Province.
The Government noted that such activities have contributed to social and economic issues, environmental degradation and coastal erosion. A special committee headed by former Southern Province Land Commissioner Senaka Palliyaguruge will be appointed to address the issue.
A dedicated police unit will also be established to act against politically backed land encroachments. In addition, commercially allocated lands that have remained unused for five years or more will be reclaimed by the State and redistributed under structured development programmes.
