Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa Meets Australian Delegation
16-Jun-2026.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that strengthening Sri Lanka’s economic growth and international competitiveness is essential to address the structural challenges facing the education sector and to create a more investment-friendly environment.
He made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation currently undertaking a study visit to Sri Lanka, organised by the Victoria Branch of the Australian Institute of International Affairs. The discussion took place at the Office of the Opposition Leader in Colombo.
Premadasa noted that although free education and free healthcare remain key pillars of Sri Lanka’s welfare state, the education system is currently facing serious challenges.
He further stated that the present education system produces thousands of graduates each year whose qualifications do not align with labour market demands, leaving many struggling to secure employment. The overemphasis on rote learning, outdated school curricula and the politicisation of language rights have adversely affected the education sector.
While Sri Lanka has more than 10,000 schools, only national and leading schools enjoy substantial resources and facilities. The majority continue to operate with limited infrastructure. Although the welfare state was intended to reduce inequalities, the existing system has instead widened these disparities.
He emphasised that policy coherence and institutional strengthening are necessary to ensure sustainable development and restore public confidence in governance. Democratic governance, economic stability, social harmony and positive international relations, he said, are vital pillars for national development.
