Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr Harini Amarasuriya has stated that preschool education represents a crucial milestone in shaping a child's future educational journey. She emphasised that the Government is committed to ensuring quality standards in the sector and to strengthening monitoring mechanisms across all provinces.
She made these remarks while addressing a certificate-awarding ceremony for diploma holders of the North Western Province Preschool Teacher Training Institute for the academic years 2023/2024, held on June 5 at the North Western Provincial Council Auditorium in Kurunegala during an educational inspection visit.
The Prime Minister stated that the Government plans to establish long-term sustainability in preschool education over the coming years. To achieve this objective, the National Education Commission, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and the Ministry of Education are jointly developing policy frameworks, teacher training standards and monitoring guidelines.
She announced plans to commence preschool teacher training programmes within the year, with the objective of implementing a uniform national preschool curriculum by 2027.
Dr Amarasuriya also stressed the importance of promoting a proper understanding of preschool education within society. She noted that preschool education should focus on laying a strong foundation for children's early learning, particularly through the development of motor skills and other age-appropriate competencies.
She further observed that parents and adults have a responsibility to create environments that support children's social and cognitive development without imposing unnecessary burdens on them.
Addressing preschool teachers, she emphasised their important role in educating society about the true purpose and value of preschool education.
