People Must Not Be Abandoned During Difficult Times: Sajith Premadasa
31-May-2026.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has said that just as past leaders did not abandon the people during times of crisis, the present generation must also stand by them during difficult periods.
Addressing a public event in Polonnaruwa on May 30, Premadasa stated that farmers across the country are facing severe economic hardship.
He accused the Government of failing to fulfil its election pledge of guaranteeing a fixed price of Rs.150 per kilogram of paddy.
According to him, rising costs of seed, fertiliser and pesticides, fertiliser shortages, black-market activities and drought conditions have pushed farmers into debt while leaving them with little or no profit.
He further alleged that those who once claimed to champion farmers are now portraying agriculture as an unprofitable occupation. However, he argued that agriculture can be transformed into a profitable sector through modern technology and increased productivity.
Premadasa stressed the need for continued support and protection for the farming community.
