Reliable sources have confirmed that a statement has been recorded from Azath Maulana in connection with investigations into the Easter Sunday terror attacks.
A high-level team led by CID Director Shani Abeysekera reportedly travelled to France last week to continue investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks. The main objective of the visit was to directly meet Azath Maulana, who is currently seeking political asylum in Europe, and record his statement.
It is reported that the team also planned to obtain additional digital evidence and documentation related to allegations he raised in the Channel 4 documentary.
Recently, after the CID submitted a B-report to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, the Magistrate reportedly directed the investigators on the necessity of recording Maulana’s statement. The CID and Attorney General’s Department had informed court that steps were being taken accordingly.
Following this, the team led by Abeysekera travelled to France. It has been reported that Maulana’s statement was recorded at the Sri Lankan Embassy in France, with the support of French security authorities and Interpol.
Meanwhile, it is also learnt that the team is gathering information on another key suspect linked to the Easter Sunday attacks who is believed to have fled Sri Lanka.
It is noteworthy that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, during his speech at the NPP May Day rally in Maharagama, had stated that a CID officer had travelled abroad as part of ongoing investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks.
