‘I Do Not Represent Parliament’ – Defence Secretary
04-May-2026.
Defence Secretary, retired Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyyakontha, has stated that claims circulating that he represents Parliament are completely false.
He made these remarks while responding to journalists after visiting Kandy on May 2, where he paid respects and received blessings at the Asgiriya and Malwathu Chapters.
He further stated as follows:
Question: Are there possibilities for Sri Lankan forces to rejoin United Nations peacekeeping missions?
Answer: Yes, opportunities have arisen again. Special discussions have been held regarding deploying Sri Lankan forces for peacekeeping duties in Haiti. We expect to complete the required procedures within the next two to two-and-a-half months and deploy military and police personnel.
Question: What steps are being taken against drug trafficking and key figures linked to it?
Answer: For a long time, drug trafficking operated freely in Sri Lanka, backed by various influences and pressures. That situation has now changed. The Tri-Forces, especially the Navy, are actively working to fully control and eradicate drug trafficking. We have taken firm decisions. The armed forces are providing full cooperation to the Ministry of Public Security. Drug traffickers and underworld gangs linked to them are being arrested gradually. Investigations are ongoing. Key individuals behind these operations will be brought before the law.
Question: Can drug trafficking figures hiding abroad be arrested?
Answer: Yes. Those hiding overseas will also be arrested. Legal steps are being taken to bring them back to Sri Lanka. All actions are being carried out strictly within the law.
Question: Do you have any role in investigations regarding the Government’s USD 2.5 billion transaction issue?
Answer: No. We have no connection to those investigations. They are being handled separately by another division.
Question: What is your view on allegations that the number of personnel in the armed forces is declining?
Answer: We are aware of the reduction in manpower. However, we have strategic plans to restore the situation and future actions will be taken accordingly.
Question: Do you represent Parliament?
Answer: No. The claim that I represent Parliament is completely false.
