04-May-2026.
The death of the Assistant Director of the Foreign Resources Department of the Finance Ministry, who had been suspended in connection with the USD 2.5 million Treasury financial fraud, has been ruled as suicide.
Police stated that the Judicial Medical Advisory Panel appointed to conduct the postmortem examination concluded that all injuries found on the body were self-inflicted and that the cause of death was suicide.
The deceased official, identified as Ranga Rajapaksa, was found dead at his residence in Kuliyapitiya on April 30.
Police said that the body was recovered after the deceased’s daughter noticed him lying in the garden and informed other family members. Officers who arrived at the scene observed blood stains nearby. Officials also reported multiple injuries on the body, including cuts on one leg and an injury on one hand. A small knife was also recovered near the body.
Initially, the death was treated as suspicious in order to determine whether it was a murder, suicide, or accident. The Kuliyapitiya Magistrate visited the location and conducted a magisterial inquiry on Friday. The body was later transferred to the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital for the postmortem examination.
It is noteworthy that a four-member Judicial Medical Advisory Panel was appointed to carry out the postmortem, considering the sensitivity of the case involving Treasury fraud allegations.
