Former President Maithripala Sirisena appeared before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and recorded a statement regarding alleged financial irregularities in the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project.

He appeared at around 9.30 a.m. on April 28, in response to a summons issued by the Commission. Officials recorded his statement for approximately three hours.

Speaking to media afterwards, he stated that he was called to provide clarification on issues related to financial transactions and project delays.

He noted that the project, initially launched by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, had faced significant difficulties when he assumed office in 2015. He added that due to international sanctions on Iran, funding arrangements were disrupted, leading to reliance on Treasury funds.

He further stated that any allegations of corruption should be properly investigated and clarified through transparent inquiries.
