Former Minister Rajitha Senaratne has called for an international-level investigation, with the involvement of the International Monetary Fund, into the alleged cyber theft of 2.5 million US dollars meant for foreign debt repayment.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo on April 24, he said the incident represents an unprecedented breach of financial security in both Sri Lankan and global history.

He questioned how such a large transaction could bypass multiple layers of international banking safeguards, including authorisations required from senior treasury officials.

Senaratne rejected the adequacy of internal investigations, stating that only a transparent international probe can uncover the truth. He also warned that public funds lost in such incidents would ultimately lead to higher taxes and increased cost of living.

He further criticised threats against media institutions and stressed that attempts to suppress financial disclosures would expose double standards within the government.
