Democratic Tamil National Alliance Awaits ITAK Decision
13-Apr-2026.
If the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) and the Democratic Tamil National Alliance are to move forward together, a clear and unanimous stance must be taken regarding the formation of a common structure and the use of a common symbol.
In this context, internal sources state that the Democratic Tamil National Alliance is currently awaiting an official decision from ITAK on the matter.
Following the conclusion of the local government elections, continuous discussions have been taking place between ITAK and the Democratic Tamil National Alliance. As a result, monthly meetings between both parties have been continuing. The most recent meeting was held at the office of ITAK Acting Leader C.V.K. Sivagnanam in Nallur.
During this discussion, attention was given to forming a common framework for joint political activity, announcing the alliance under a common symbol, and continuing to use the name “Tamil National Alliance” without objections.
At that time, ITAK representatives responded that they would convey their position after convening the party’s central committee and arriving at a decision.
However, it is noteworthy that the central committee meeting has still not been convened, and the party’s central committee session has reportedly been delayed for nearly six months.
Meanwhile, as the Democratic Tamil National Alliance continues to await ITAK’s final decision, the alliance’s leadership committee recently held an online meeting. During the discussion, it was emphasised that if ITAK fails to make a firm decision and instead continues to act solely in its own party interests, the alliance should inform the public in advance that it will end dialogue with ITAK and function independently as a separate political force.
