The national programme titled ‘Surakimu Lanka’, introduced to encourage the public to use energy economically during the current crisis situation, was officially launched on March 29. The main objective of the programme is to build a society that responsibly conserves electricity resources.

Taking into consideration the possible impact on the country’s electricity and fuel supply due to the war situation in the Middle East, as well as future climate change forecasts, the government has implemented this programme.

The key expectation of the initiative is to highlight the need to use state resources economically and transparently, while enabling direct public contribution towards national energy security. The programme will be implemented for the next five months starting from March 29.

Under the vision of “A Prosperous Country – A Beautiful Life”, this programme is being carried out as part of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, under the theme “Surakimu Lanka – Let Us Unite – Let Us Illuminate.” Cooperation is expected from the government, semi-government, private sector institutions, civil society organisations and the general public.

A major goal of the programme is to encourage people to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours from 6.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m., or to complete high electricity-consuming activities as much as possible during daytime. It has been stated that no restrictions or limitations will be imposed on electricity usage under this programme.

Since a major portion of the country’s electricity generation depends on hydropower, the government has also stressed the need to use water more economically in the future. The government aims to bring about a change in public mindset towards energy conservation and encourage voluntary participation in this national effort.
