During the session, while some member states welcomed the extension of the UN’s mandate on Sri Lanka, others objected, citing respect for Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and non-interference in domestic affairs.

China stated that it supports Sri Lanka’s efforts to improve human rights and rejects resolutions passed without the concerned country’s consent, saying such extensions bring no real results.

South Korea welcomed Sri Lanka’s progress in improving human rights and urged it to continue cooperation with the UN Human Rights Office.

Japan acknowledged the Sri Lankan government’s efforts toward national reconciliation and praised its decision to permit the High Commissioner’s visit.

Ethiopia emphasized that while improving human rights is important, Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and non-interference in its internal affairs must be respected, expressing concern about externally imposed extensions.
