Northeast monsoon brings heavy rain across Tamil Nadu

Heavy rain lashed Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu on October 21, with heavy rainfall expected in isolated areas, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). 

While most parts of the state received less than 50 mm of rainfall, Ramanathapuram recorded 149 mm, Nagapattinam 90 mm, and parts of Chennai 63.5 mm.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected ongoing infrastructure development and renovation works in south Chennai aimed at improving waterways to help floodwater flow into the sea during the monsoon season.

The projects include deepening and widening canals, constructing covered concrete canals, stormwater drains, and desilting estuarine areas. He visited the Okkiam Madhavi canal, where works are underway at a cost of Rs 27 crore, and inspected desilting activities in Kannagi Nagar.
