Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue arrested on bribery charges

A Deputy Commissioner of the City Branch of the Inland Revenue Department has been arrested on charges of attempting to accept a bribe of 50,000 rupees from a businessman.

The suspect was arrested on July 7 by officials from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

According to the Commission, the arrest was made following a complaint lodged by a businessman from the Piliyandala area. 

The suspect was accused of demanding 100,000 rupees as a bribe to issue the annual audit report for the businessman’s company, operating in Dematagoda, Kolonnawa.

However, he agreed to accept only 50,000 rupees, of which he had already collected 42,000 rupees as a bribe on the 3rd of this month. When he attempted to collect the remaining 8,000 rupees yesterday, he was apprehended.

The arrested suspect is to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
