The United States imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro and several senior officials, accusing them of aiding drug traffickers and letting cocaine production reach record levels.
The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the sanctions on October 24, naming President Gustavo Petro and Colombia’s Interior Minister Armando Benedetti among four individuals added to its "Specially Designated Nationals" list.
The designation effectively freezes any US-based assets and bans American entities from conducting business with them.
