In a sharp reaction to US sanctions on Russian oil majors, Vladimir Putin declared on October 23 that Moscow would never bow down to pressure from Washington or any other nation, warning that any strikes deep within Russian territory would be met with a "very serious and overwhelming" response, news agency Reuters reported. 

He called the US sanctions a "hostile act" that does not strengthen Russian-American relations.

Commenting on US sanctions, he described them as an "unfriendly" act with "certain consequences," but insisted they will not significantly affect their economic well-being, adding that Russia’s energy sector remains confident.

"This is, of course, an attempt to put pressure on Russia," he said. "But no self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever decide anything under pressure".
