Amazon is now using over 7.50 lakh robots in its fulfilment centers globally, Business Insider reports. These robots are integrated with human workers to perform various tasks such as moving packages, sorting items, and creating customised packaging.
Tye Brady, Amazon’s Chief Technologist for Robotics, stated that the company’s advancements in robotics contribute to faster deliveries and potentially save the company billions annually. By 2030, the company could be saving as much as $10 billion per year, according to estimates from Morgan Stanley.
In addition to improving operational efficiency, the integration of robotics has led Amazon to create more jobs in fields like AI and machine learning. The company has also taken steps to improve its robotics capabilities by investing in startups.
Among Amazon’s more premium robots is Sparrow, a robotic arm introduced in 2023 at the Texas fulfilment center. Unlike earlier models that were limited to handling large packages, Sparrow can pick individual items from containers using AI and computer vision. This advanced system is capable of recognising and managing over 200 million unique items, boosting efficiency in sorting and storing products.
Other robots, such as Hercules and Titan, are designed to lift heavy pods of items in Amazon’s warehouses. Hercules, introduced in 2017, can carry pods weighing up to 1,250 pounds, while Titan, which debuted the same year, can handle loads twice as heavy. Robots like Pegasus and Xanthus play a crucial role in sorting packages, with Xanthus being noted for its versatility and reduced production costs.
