Two Sri Lankan fishing vessels missing with six fishermen onboard

The vessels had departed from the fishing ports of Jaffna and Hambantota on July 7.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources says that two fishing vessels carrying a total of six Sri Lankan fishermen have gone missing.

The vessels had departed from the fishing ports of Jaffna and Hambantota on July 7.

Director General of the department Susantha Kahawatta revealed that the multi-day fishing vessel, which left the Point Pedro fishing harbor in Jaffna, had four fishermen on board. Meanwhile, the one-day fishing vessel that departed from Hambantota Fishing Harbour was carrying two fishermen.

No information has been received regarding the whereabouts of the missing fishermen. The Navy, along with other relevant authorities, has been alerted and is conducting a search operation to locate the vessels and their crews, Mr. Kahawatta added.
