Man dies after arrest in Chilliwack

The Chilliwack RCMP says officers were called to the area of Mary Street and Patten Avenue just after noon for reports of a fight inside a vehicle.

B.C.’s police oversight agency has been called to Chilliwack after a man died in custody Monday afternoon.

The Chilliwack RCMP says officers were called to the area of Mary Street and Patten Avenue just after noon for reports of a fight inside a vehicle.

When police arrived, investigators say a man was taken into custody. A short time later, the RCMP says “he went into medical distress.”

Despite the efforts of first responders, the man died at the scene. No further details have been provided.

Police had been asking people to avoid the area of Mary Street between Patten and Spadina avenues.
