Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to Governor RN Ravi on Wednesday, stating that former minister K Ponmudy should be sworn in as a Cabinet Minister on Mar 14. This comes after the Supreme Court stayed Ponmudy's conviction in a disproportionate assets case.
The Supreme Court overturned the Madras High Court's verdict in December 2023, when Ponmudy and his wife were sentenced to three years' imprisonment and fined Rs 50 lakh each. The top court stayed the conviction and suspended his sentence of three years' imprisonment.
Ponmudy, a DMK strongman hailing from Villupuram district in northern Tamil Nadu and representing the Tirukkoyilur Assembly constituency, was serving as the Higher Education Minister earlier until he was disqualified as an MLA after the Madras High Court convicted him.
