The Coimbatore Metro is an ambitious project comprising of five metro lines along a 147 km track length. The project has recently been granted Rs 9,000 crore and its first phase will see the construction of two corridors, which will connect the city’s major landmarks.

Initially envisioned as a monorail, the Coimbatore Metro project was converted to a Metro Rail and further to a Metro Lite project. With three proposed phases, the project is expected to connect significant transportation nodes, allowing for a smooth interchange at the airport, rail junctions, and bus terminals of the city. The fast rapid transit system is expected to be completed by 2027 at an estimated cost of Rs 9,424 crore.

The fare details and timings of the Coimbatore Metro are yet to be released. However, once complete, the project will reduce the pressure on the existing road network, shorten the commute time and offer travellers a more sustainable transportation option.

Any significant public infrastructure project positively impacts the real estate market in the surrounding localities. For example, among the Tier-2 cities, Coimbatore has become a thriving real estate market and one of the top destinations for real estate investment in India. According to realty analysts, the proposed metro corridors can increase land prices by 8-10 percent in the areas alongside.

With various projects either in the pipeline or at the operational stage, Coimbatore is poised to attract huge investments. The upcoming defence industrial park, the widening of bypass lanes, the construction of a terminal at the Vellalore integrated bus stand, and the proposed Metro Lite project will boost Coimbatore’s realty demand and attract investors.

The existing network of flyovers across Avinashi Road, Trichi Road, and Mettupalayam Road poses a challenge to the metro’s construction. However, revised designs for the flyover have been submitted to the Central Government to ensure construction is on time. Once approved, these flyovers may be built in a way that is compliant with the Coimbatore Metro plan.
