An SC/ST (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) special court in Telangana’s Adilabad on August 28 sentenced auto-rickshaw driver Shaik Mukdoom to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 for raping a tribal woman in Jainoor, Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, on 31 August, 2024.

The case had triggered unrest in Jainoor after the incident came to light. The accused had lured the woman on the pretext of giving her a ride and later attacked her. The assault sparked protests in the town, leading to communal tensions, with over 30 tribal persons booked in connection with the violence.

She told police that he attempted to rape her and, when she resisted, he attacked her with a stick. Believing she was dead, he left her on the road to make it appear like an accident.

Following her statement, police registered a case under the SC/ST Act, including charges of attempted rape and attempted murder.
