Russia Calls Sri Lanka a Trusted South Asian Partner

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s status as a reliable partner in South Asia and expressed Moscow’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

Lavrov made these remarks during a meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath on the sidelines of the ASEAN ministerial events in Kuala Lumpur.

He also thanked Sri Lanka for its October 2024 letter expressing interest in joining BRICS and said Russia fully supports this move. 

Lavrov emphasized the historical depth of Sri Lanka–Russia relations and voiced readiness to expand cooperation in all areas.

In response, Foreign Minister Herath expressed gratitude for Russia’s consistent support during economic crises and other challenges and pledged to deepen engagement through multi-sectoral collaboration.
