1993 Bombay blasts accused Abu Salem moves High Court seeking remission

.

Gangster Abu Salem, convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case and currently serving a life sentence at Nashik Central Prison, has approached the Bombay High Court seeking remission of his sentence.

Salem has urged the court to direct prison authorities to consider his total time spent in custody - 24 years, 9 months, and 16 days as of December 31, 2024 - and provide him with a specific release date.

Salem's plea, filed through advocate Farhana Shah, was mentioned before a bench of Justices Sarang Kotwal and S.M. Modak, which scheduled the matter for hearing on March 10.

The application follows the Supreme Court's July 2022 order, which, in line with India's extradition treaty and the sovereign assurance given to Portugal, capped his imprisonment at 25 years.
