Australian Open: American teen Learner Tien knocks out Daniil Medvedev

19-year-old Learner Tien pulled off a massive heist after beating World No.5 Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the men’s singles at the Australian Open 2025.

On Thursday, January 16, the teenage sensation took four hours and 48 minutes to beat Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (8-10), 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) at the Margaret Court Arena.

Tien became the youngest American to beat an ATP top five player in a major since 1990. He also became the youngest man from the United States to go through to the third round at Melbourne Park since an 18-year-old Pete Sampras in 1990.
