Corruption in Bengal, too many mistakes being made: Trinamool MP who quit post

Sircar asserted that the people of West Bengal were unable to digest "the disease of corruption".

"Too many mistakes were being made", said Jawhar Sircar, the Trinamool Congress leader who resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP on Sunday over the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government's handling of the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG hospital.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today TV, Sircar said there was a "disease of corruption" in Bengal, and asserted that "communal parties" may take over the state if the state government did not change its course of action.

"I have observed for about a month as a disciplined MP, keeping myself quiet. I find there are too many mistakes being made in handling the situation, and it has become much too complicated now. I tried to reach out to the party leadership, but it did not work," he said.

"This case has come as a jolt to the democratic forces in West Bengal. If they do not change the course of action, they will face the reality that communal parties may take over," he said.

Sircar asserted that the people of West Bengal were unable to digest "the disease of corruption". "The disease of corruption has caught up in West Bengal and the state is not in a position to accept it.
Please try to understand that the people of West Bengal are unable to digest this amount of corruption," he said.

"I have stuck to my principles. I am quitting as a member of Rajya Sabha but that does not mean I am quitting my principles," he added.

He said the protests against the trainee doctor's rape and murder should not be viewed as a "political confrontation".
