OpenAI internal messaging system was hacked in 2023

The hacker could not, however, access the system where the company builds its AI.

In 2023, a hacker infiltrated OpenAI’s –– the company behind ChatGPT –– internal messaging systems, according to a report by The New York Times that was published on Thursday.

Reportedly, the hacker extracted information from an online forum where OpenAI employees were discussing the company's latest technologies, and stole information regarding the design of the company's AI technologies.

The hacker could not, however, access the system where the company builds its AI. As per the report, OpenAI had informed its employees and the board about the hack, but it did not reveal the information to the public.

The report reveals the reason why the company did that.

OpenAI claims that the information was kept from customers because the company found that no information of the users’ was compromised in the alleged hack.

The company says that OpenAI executives took the decision not to share the information publicly because no information or data related to customers or its partners were stolen in the hack.

OpenAI executives reportedly did not view the incident as a national security threat. They believed the hacker was an independent individual with no connections to any foreign government.

Consequently, the Microsoft-backed company did not notify federal law enforcement agencies about the breach either.
