Netflix could start offering content for free

Netflix is reportedly planning to introduce a free, ad-supported tier in select markets, marking a significant shift in its business strategy.

So, users will be able to watch Netflix for free. Sources familiar with the company’s plans told Bloomberg that this new tier may be targeted primarily at audiences in Europe and Asia.

It is currently unknown whether it will come to India or not. But since the company hasn't yet introduced a free plan with ads, there are chances it might come to this country as well.

If this makes it to India, then users won't be required to spend money to get access to Netflix content and they will be able to watch anything on Netflix for free, with ads.

The report says that Netflix is in the preliminary stages of discussing this potential move.

The company has previously tested a free service in Kenya, offering a limited selection of content, although that initiative was discontinued later.

The proposed free tier is expected to follow a similar model, providing a curated and restricted library but focusing on established markets such as Japan and Germany instead of emerging ones.

This potential shift comes as Netflix navigates an increasingly competitive landscape. In recent years, it has faced challenges from rivals like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max.

To stay ahead, Netflix has implemented several changes, including stricter measures against password sharing and multiple subscription price hikes.

In 2022, the introduction of an ad-supported tier was another bold move to attract budget-conscious customers and tap into advertising revenue.
