Australia's renowned fast bowler Mitchell Starc has attributed his evolution into one of cricket's most lethal pacers to the advice he received from former national team coach Tim Nielsen. Starc revealed that Nielsen's tough words served as a catalyst for his motivation, driving him to excel and establish himself as a dominant force in the sport.
Starc's career has witnessed several injury hindrances throughout his career, particularly during the earlier stages. The 34-year-old believes it was Nielsen's comment from 2010, asking him to toughen up his game, that pushed him to strive for betterment amidst the pain of injuries.
Starc reflected that Nielsen's comments made him realize the importance of overcoming the fear of injuries and focusing on self-improvement. A recent example of Starc's battles against injuries came in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he played the entire tournament despite reported groin soreness that had afflicted him since before the tournament began.
"I think a lot of work goes into that...a lot of work that people don't see, whether it be the rehab or the handling of niggles...But I think that comes down to experiencing and knowing how to deal with certain things and finding ways through them to still make an impact with a team or perform and carry out your role." Starc added.
